Hey everyone! This is my last semester at WSU and I am writing a fitness blog for my Principles of Health and Wellbeing class. I have decided to write my blog about my attempt to stay active and to eat healither while I'm at school, which is not always the easiest goal. I'll keep you posted about how my task is going throughout the semester. Wish me luck!

cheap, healthy, good!
Hey guys! So as you all know I am a student at WSU. I live off campus in an apartment with two other girls. While we would all like to eat healthy all of the time, we all know that's not always the easiest thing to do. I do have a part time job, but the money is not always rolling in, so buying healthy meals can get too expensive. I end up eating some form of cheap pasta or grilled cheese most of the time. I feel like all I eat is carbs because I think that's all I can afford. I am now on a mission to change that! I have been looking through some sites and found a great article for my exact problem. Cheap, Healthy College Food: Tips for Frugal, Nutritious Dining in the Dorm and Beyond is written by someone who has been there and who found some tricks along the way. While all the advice is good, I found the simple fact of investing in a cookbook to be one of the best. Cooking is not always something I'm good at, but it is something I need to get better at. I feel like my roommates and I are always getting take out when we get sick of what we have around, which can get too expensive and is not always healthy either. (The site also has great tips on eating out!) I am going to try to get my roommates to have a sit down dinner night at least once a week where we can make dinner together. This will give us some bonding time as well as allow us to make some healthy meals for less! The website has a lot of other great tips so I will post the link so everyone can check it out. eating healthy in college for less!

This is a great blog and a fantastic (and funny website). So many practical suggestions there. Please take a moment to check it out. I loved the line about people like people who cook for them - so true! And if you've never seen Animal House it is a must rent (not rated G, but a classic).
ReplyDeleteGreat article. How true it is that it is often expensive (and could be time consuming)to eat healthy. One thing I depend on while trying to survive on limited income and time is my crock pot. It is so easy to throw in veggies and make so many differnt types of delicious and healthy soups. It is also wonderful to throw a chicken in and have your meal ready when you get home.
ReplyDeleteIt is so true that healthy eating is very time consuming. I agree with Primetime. I use my crockpot a lot as well. It is a great way to eat healthy and you do not have to spend as much time cooking. I will get up early before classes sometimes and put all my ingredients in and have it on slow cook for the whole day. Then after classes and other activities, dinner is ready when you return. Plus, your apartment will smell delicious the whole day =)
ReplyDeleteI found the website to be very informal! This past school year, I've made sure to eat breakfast and I try to snack smarter. I think if you only buy healthy foods and keep them visible, you are more likely to eat them when your on the run and if you wanted to eat more then it would be ok to do so. For an example, I started buying more fruit rather than chips, and I can feel the difference of being more satisfied after snacking. Also, I like the tip that if you eat something unhealthy, you should eat 2 healthy things. I think being in college causes a lot of barriers to consistently eating healthily, but if you make small changes, they'll add up and improve your overall well being.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is so right. I feel like I am eating carbs a lot at school too! I wish I had more money to buy healthy foods. I have never thought to buy a cook book. I think it would be a great investment to have and to always have around. Even taking it home would be great too to keep our parents from having always to cook! Carbs are good once in awhile but not everyday! I try and keep away from them as much as i can.!
