As college students, it’s inevitable that our intake of beer is going to be higher than our calorie counting-selves may like, but did you know that beer has some great benefits for your body?
According to an article on the Men’s Health website, recent research has revealed bioactive compounds in beer can help battle cancer, boost your metabolism, and more!
I always consider beer to be a high calorie drink, but this website also tells readers that darker beers have fewer calories and usually have a rich, smokey taste.
While I’m out of luck in this case because I tend to only like light beers and stay away from the darker colored brands, there are always the not so good tasting, lower calorie or low carb brands like MGD 64, Michelob Ultra, or even Coors Light which is pretty inexpensive for us college kids on a budget.
There is also a great article on ShapeFit that tells you all about low carb beers and what you need to know!
A somewhat depressing fact is that to make light beers with reduced calories, brewers cut alcohol levels.
This causes you to drink more beers, which will then in return give you more calories.
There is really no win win.
The alcohol market is currently booming with low calorie and low carbohydrate options for all types of alcohol, not just beer.
The trick is to find which beverage you like the best and can afford, and then do some research and find out the lowest calorie option out there! To find out more, check out the articles!

Now this is some information I can get excited about. Drink a beer and help prevent cancer, it seems to good to be true, but I'm not going to argue with science. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI never would have thought that beer could benefit your health in any way possible. It is very interesting that some types of beer can help combat cancer. I do not like beer much myself but I am aware of the many companies that are trying to lower the calorie count in each drink which I think is a great idea, especially for college kids who are not always watching exactly what we are putting into our bodies. I did not know that darker beers contained fewer calories and though i am not a huge beer fan I may give one of these lower calorie types a try!
ReplyDeleteThis was definetly a blog topic I couldnt pass up. I was shocked to read that beer has some benefits, attributed to cancer. I dont usually drink beer because I feel like they are heavy but the lower calorie ones seem good enough to try!
ReplyDeleteI was aware of the benefits of darker beers and my friends were always shocked to find out that one of my favorite beers...guinness was a lower calorie option than their beers. I was unaware however that they cut alcohol levels in making the lighter beers though.
ReplyDeleteWow! I'd really like to look more into how beer can help lower risk of cancer, I thought it was the other way around! I think it's based on moderation, I little of everything can do you good I guess :). I also lose however with the dark beers being better because I also prefer light beer. I don't know how beer would boost your metabolism I will have to look into that as well. Very interesting blog.
ReplyDeleteInteresting blog! I never thought that darker beers would be less calories, or have health benifits. I will have to remeber that the next time i go to grab a light beer, to grab the darker one instead.
ReplyDeleteI like that blog alot! I couldnt believe that beer actually has some good effects. I was also surprised to read that some of the darker heavier beers actually have less calories than some of the lighter beers. I guess what happens is people drink a lot of light beers becasue they do have that much less alcohol, when if they just stuck to the dark heavier beers they would have drink much less and save themselves some calories. This was very interesting!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting blog! I always thought the same as you, that the darker the beer the more calories it had. You are completely right when saying there is no winning because if you drink light beer it has less alcohol which leads to drinking more of them which just increases empty calories. It's important to drink what you like and the best way is always in moderation. Good choice for a blog, I think all of us college kids can relate to it.
ReplyDeleteThis really was an interesting post, but with my budget I am for the most part stuck with a lot of light beers for options as they run a lot cheaper than some of the quality heavy beers.
